ID Theft Facts
  • In 2006 the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) received over 674,354 complaints of fraud and Identity Theft*
  • New York State ranked 8th in the number of victims of Identity Theft reported to the FTC*
     
  • Of all the categories of complaints that were received, Identity Theft was the largest, accounting for over 1 of every 3 reported*
  • 62% of identity theft victims who reported the crime to the FTC did not bother to notify a local police department*
 
  • ID theft reported to the FTC showed no indication of age discrimination and ages ranged from under 18 to over 60*
  • 73% of all ID thefts reported involved bank fraud, loan fraud, or credit card fraud*
  • ID theft reported to the FTC: Many metropolitan areas of California and Florida ranked highest
  • ID Risk Management Associates analysis determined that only 1 in 40 ID theft victims report the crime to the FTC
